Interior Designing 101: The Three Basic Principles

Interior Designing | Home Décor

Before moving on to learn interior designing, let’s all ask ourselves; “Have we known what interior designing really means?”

Interior design is a skill that focuses on architecture and space-planning in order to create harmonious and visually aesthetic designs for homes and businesses. In other words, when you just move into a new house, you would like to design it as cohesive, yet beautiful as possible.

You want to make your living environment as comfortable and appealing as possible, whether you live in a city flat or a country cottage. However, getting that stunning style you see on TV is not always straightforward — despite the fact that they make it look so simple on those reality shows. If you try to plunge into the realm of interior design all at once, anything from color schemes to area rugs may get overwhelming.

It involves thorough planning, researching, and furniture-selection that may take a lot of your time and effort. And worse yet, designing or decorating a room without a plan is analogous to cooking or baking without a recipe: it might go horribly wrong.

We’ve some basics we can follow to avoid things from going terribly wrong, and we’ve curated them to ensure readability even for beginners. These are simple concepts that can be a wonderful place to start, so let’s check it out!

The three basic principles in home interior designs

The first is style. Style is crucial in this, because picking an interior design style from the start will help you keep your space focused and coherent. There are many other decorating styles to pick from, including shabby chic, Mediterranean, mid-century modern, industrial, Scandinavian, and farmhouse, and each one has its own set of design components, color schemes or color palettes, window treatments, floor layouts, and even wall-art styles. To gain a sense of what types and decorating concepts you enjoy, familiarize yourself with a variety of styles, including current design trends.

The second principle in the book is focal point. In one of our previous articles, the Kulture Deco team discussed the importance of having a focal point of a room. A headboard, for instance, can be a wonderful focal point for your bedroom. You can also utilize a piece of art, a fireplace, or a nice couch - that can draw viewers’ attention, to be a room’s focal point. However, you need to remember to not go overboard, because having too many focal points can have an adverse effect than your intention; it can be overpowering and not focused.

Last but not least, you need to pay attention to balance. You need to evenly distribute the visual weight of your furniture and decorations to establish balance in each area. Consider scale (big vs. little), texture (hard vs. soft), and location (high, eye-level, and low placement, and left and right placement). Pay attention to subtle contrasts in a single area, to enable you to create a room that has the feeling of completeness and well-balance.
